To me, all talk shows are basically the same. How do we end world hunger, politics, movies, trends, blah blah blah. I feel that they are all a waste of time. However, I got hooked on one. The Tyra Banks Show. There is something different about her show. Now of course there are the episodes, being a former model, where she does the ever typical makeover/fashion show. Okay. Fine. But she does something else. She actually addresses the everyday issues that people (mostly women, since that is the type of person that watches her show) deal with. I was amazed to see that she was talking about weight and age, two major ideas that plague women on a daily basis. She has addressed issues like gaydar, and hooking up. And what I love most is that Tyra brings these issues down to a personal level.
I respect Oprah. She has worked hard for herself. However, I think she preaches way over people’s heads, mine at the least. When I watch her show, I feel that there is nothing I, as a lowly college stoodent, can do to end hunger in Africa, or stop the sex slave trade. I feel that Oprah is showing me that only people like her, with a lot of money and time can help, and that only these huge global issues are important. I can’t help but wonder, What about me? What can I do? I can’t fly around the world and administer vaccinations. I can’t donate hundreds of dollars to any relief fund considering I ain’t got two dimes to rub together.
Tyra speaks to me. She tells people just like me that we can make a difference, even if we are not rich or have all the time in the world. I admire her and how she focuses on the personal. I was glad to hear that she started her own girls camp to help young women and their self esteem. I think that people don’t care enough about it, and it is so important.
Thank you to Tyra Banks for her work. I do admire her. Also, a thank you to Oprah who can fly around the world and give lots of money to people that I cannot help out.
And if this blog seems scattered, well, so be it. I was kinda getting all the words out of my head.
I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.
